January Book of the Month
Jodi Picoult’s latest book is a tearjerker of epic proportions. I like Jodi’s books. I used to belong to a book-club that sneered at both her and Dan Brown in favour of ones with an impenetrable literary style - and I found that attitude rather arrogant.
There is a reason she sells her books by the million and I feel it’s her ability to get inside the mind of the characters she creates. Her wisdom and insight into the plight of people and their families resonates with readers. She finds the hidden meaning in the thoughts and feelings and puts them into words in a way that rings true and in hindsight appears almost obvious.
Handle with Care is about a girl who is born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta and follows her life, her sister’s life, her father’s life and her mother’s decision to sue the obstetrician (and also her friend) who looked after her in her pregnancy but failed to diagnose via ultrasound the condition that causes brittle bone syndrome. It says more about a mother’s love and determination to help her daughter live the best life she can possibly give her given the circumstances. The mother is willing to give up everything in order her daughter can live her life to the fullest.
Like her other books it is very unputdownable and I read it in three days. There’s nothing I like more than travelling on a plane, with a glass of wine in hand and the latest Jodi Picoult blockbuster on the tray in front of me.
I’ve been in the JP flow-zone to such as extent that I’ve read through periods of severe turbulence without even realizing the plane was in danger of breaking up.
